“My name is Anne Marie and I’m an adult.”
Leaving high school is a difficult decision
The decision to leave high school is different for every person and we can’t always understand why someone chooses another path in life. With her experience growing up in a small town, Anne Marie shares some reasons that came to her mind.
“We leave high school for many reasons, and they’re not always academic,” says Anne Marie. “A lot of the time, it’s the personal life, your own circumstances at home, and a lot of time it’s out of your control.”
Support helps to carry on
Taking the first step is often the hardest part when you decide to return to complete your high school education. Once you begin your first day of class and achieve small successes, the encouragement from the staff finds a way to carry you forward.
“Several teachers are ready, willing, and able to answer questions to provide you with support that wasn’t there when you were a high school student,” shares Anne Marie.
Finding an opportunity to succeed
Once you finally meet with the staff, you quickly realize that they want to support you as you pursue your education, they take an interest in your life, and they help you overcome the looming doubts. The personal support and understanding is unlike the experience you would have in regular high school.
“At the Discovery Centre, classes are small. You have one on one help from teachers and they are there for your benefit,” says Anne Marie. “They take an interest in your life, they want you to succeed and find ways to make it work.“
The truth
Anne Marie has been an educator for over 30 years and is focused on empowering those who wish to receive their Adult Basic Education.
“Don’t call me a teacher — call me a support person, a mentor, a study buddy. I’m someone who is here to help you understand and to help organize your thoughts,” Anne Marie smiles. “I’m just here to help.”
