Rosalind Hussey always preached the importance of having an education to her daughters, but found herself tongue-tied at her eldest daughter’s high school graduation when asked why she didn’t have a high school diploma as well.
On one of the proudest days of her life, the question she’d feared most had become a reality. Practice what you preach echoed through her mind as she tried to explain the days of her youth when she foolishly thought she’d never really need a high school diploma. That question on that day was the beginning of a new journey for Rosalind.
She was determined, but shaking, on the day she took the first step and walked in the door of the Discovery Centre. It soon became clear to her that, with the help of the amazing staff at the Centre, she could build her confidence and reach her goal. “Can I really do this?” was replaced with, “I can really do this!”
It didn’t take as long as she thought it would either. The staff and fellow students at the Discovery Centre became like family. The work was challenging but rewarding as she earned the credits she needed. Her high school graduation then became the foundation for further successes, as she went on to earn a post-secondary Diploma in Office Administration.
Today she is proud to say that she is a member of that same wonderful staff at the Discovery Centre that helped her. “I get to go to work every day knowing that I am helping people just like me,” she says. “When a student walks through those doors for the first time, I look at them and say ‘I know how you feel,’ and I truly do know because not too long ago I walked through those same doors.”
Her advice for anyone considering going back to school: “Take that first step to a wonderful new beginning, and don’t be afraid to reach for your dreams. If you can dream it, you can achieve it at the Discovery Centre.”
