My daughter had just graduated from high school — she’s my baby,” shared Ellie, an ABE student at the Discovery Centre. “She looked at me and said ‘Mom, I think it’s your turn now.'”

Before she started the program, Ellie says she was having a hard time believing in herself and her abilities. “My self-esteem was really, really low,” says Ellie. “I felt like I wasn’t able to achieve my dreams.”

After years of self-doubt and fear of the unknown, Ellie tells us that it was her family who inspired her to take that first step to success. “My stepfather had been a recent graduate of the Discovery Centre and he told me it was one of the best choices he ever made, to just go for it.”

Ellie says, “coming to the Discovery Centre was like coming home.” Thanks to her hard work and her new sense of self-confidence, she’s on track to graduate from her program in 2019 and hopes to enter post-secondary!

Her advice to prospective students? Believe in yourself! “If you put your mind, body and heart into something, you can achieve greatness.”
