Be brave

Kathleen realizes that many adults had valid reasons for leaving school. Returning to complete their high school education is a courageous first step.

“I think you have to be very brave to make the decision to come back to high school,” explains Kathleen, “it takes a lot for students to say, ‘I’m going to put all of that behind me, and I’m going to move forward’.”

Taking the first step 

Once someone decides to invest in their future and complete their high school education, Kathleen and the team at Discovery Centre are there to offer support the moment each student walks in the door.

Kathleen shares “I often say, the hardest part about coming back to high school is walking in the front door that very first day [. . .] so when students come in that very first day, it’s our job to let them know, ‘We’re not looking back, we’re looking ahead’.”

First steps to full strides

For Kathleen, the top priority is ensuring students feel valued and supported when they take their first steps at Discovery Centre.

Kathleen explains, “Once students have that [support] they get their legs [. . .] then they can run. [. . .] You see them gain confidence. [. . .] You see them have hopes and dreams for their future.”

Students and Instructors alike

Kathleen is an instructor at Discovery Centre, and cares about helping to support her students.

“First and foremost, we’re instructors, but we are so much more than that,” Kathleen emphasized. “On any given day we can be an advisor. We can be a mentor. We can be a motivator.”

Here for you

For Kathleen, it is important to remind every student that walks in the door, “We’re not here to judge you, we’re here to help you.” Her first priority is to help every student feel like they have support in their corner and to boost their confidence! For many students, Kathleen’s is the first face they will see when they take their first step in the door, and she is sure to have a smile and kind piece of advice to greet them.
