“Graduating from the Discovery Centre with my high school diploma was the proudest moment of my adult life,” says Chris Dobbin. Before attending the Centre, many of the stepping stones of success were blocked for him. He held several jobs in the past that left him feeling “unhappy and in a rut.” Chris maintains that his decision to attend the Discovery Centre opened a multitude of choices, ultimately leading him to start his own business.
He completed the necessary training to become a certified Phlebotomist (blood and lab work collector for medical testing) and, in September 2005, he created Friendly Lab Services – a company in which he travels to clients’ homes or offices to collect blood and other lab work as ordered by each client’s doctor.
Like any new business, the first couple of years were a struggle. He credits hard work and dedication learned through the Discovery Centre’s adult-focused program with the growth of his business – now one of the leaders in its field. Today, Chris employs an office manager and two other Phlebotomists. He has also launched Friendly Printing Services. Though it is still in its infancy business-wise, he expects great things from the track record of Friendly Lab Services and the excellent contacts he’s made.
“None of this would have been possible if I hadn’t gone to the Discovery Centre. I found the Faculty and Staff encouraged me and helped me to believe that I could accomplish anything I wanted,” Chris says. “I want to say a big ‘thank you’ to everyone at the Discovery Centre for helping me fulfill my dreams of success and unlock the doors of opportunity.”
